MRI. Taking a closer look.
Mankato Regional Imaging at OFC offering the comfort and convenience of both High Field Open-Sided and Large Bore (opening) MRI scanners. Our staff will assist you and your physician in helping to decide which is best for you.
What is MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) combines a powerful magnet with an advanced computer system and radio waves to produce accurate, detailed pictures of organs and tissues to diagnose a variety of medical conditions. This is accomplished without the use of radiation or radioactive substances of any kind.
3T Siemens Larger Bore MRI:
3T Siemens Large Bore MRI scanner is the most advanced technology available for clinical use. With the large opening we are able to maximize patient comfort and ease claustrophobia. This scanner specializes in imaging MSK (Extremities & Joints), Neurology (Brain & Spine), Pelvis, Prostate, and Abdomen.
1.2 Hitachi High Field Open-Sided MRI:
1.2 Hitachi High Field Open-Sided MRI scanner provides excellent image quality while providing the most spacious surroundings. The open-sided scanner is a favorable choice for the claustrophobic and larger patients. This scanner specializes in MSK (Shoulders, Elbows, Wrists, Hands, Hips & Knees), Neurology (Brain & Spine) along with other exams.
No special preparation is needed prior to the exam unless your doctor has given you other instructions. You can eat normally and continue to take prescribed medications as required. Depending on what information your doctor needs, the MRI scan may require the use of a contrast agent given intravenously to assist in visualizing certain structures in the body.
If possible wear loose, comfortable clothing, free of zippers, buttons or other metal.
You will need to remove all metal objects that you may be carrying such as:
- Watches, Jewelry
- Wallets, Purses, Credit cards
- Cell Phones, Eyeglasses
- Hearing Aides
You will be instructed to lie comfortably on the scanning table and a special coil will be positioned close to the area of your body being examined. You can then relax while the scanner and the technologist do the work. You will be able to communicate with the technologist during the exam with the use of a call button & headset/speakers.
While the machine is taking your pictures you will hear loud knocking noises (listen here). During this time, it is important that you refrain from any movement or coughing. Headphones or earplugs will be provided to protect your ears during the exam. If you choose headphones, you can select from any of the Sirius XM Satellite Radio stations.
An average scan will take 45 – 60 minutes.
3. Getting Results:
Your images will be interpreted by sub-specialty, board-certified radiologists. We will promptly provide your physician an accurate interpretation of your scan.
The findings will be sent to your healthcare provider, who will discuss the results in his/her office or contact you by phone.

Preparing for an MRI
MRI exams involve no special preparation.
You can continue to eat normally and take prescribed medications as required. If possible, wear loose, comfortable clothing, free of zippers, buttons or metallic devices. Please remove metal objects: watches, eyeglasses, keys, pens, coins, jewelry, dentures and hearing aids.
The magnet can erase information on bank and credit cards, so these should be stored in the secured dressing room provided for your belongings. Also, you may be asked to change into a robe.

OFC Truly Has Your Back.
Our Back Care Center is a physical therapy-based program specializing in conditions of the spine. Overseen by Physicians, Physical Therapists and PT Assistants, we utilize the latest Medx technology to improve strength and range of motion, and bring you a renewed quality of life.
Our 9-12 week, research-proven program focuses on training, rehabilitation and reconditioning of spine structure and supporting tissue. Once the personalized sessions are completed, we teach daily exercises and activities to further strengthen your back and prevent future issues.
Medx works for muscles.
Medx equipment utilizes the “progressive overload principle” for muscle strengthening and comprehensive rehabilitation. Our machines are designed to isolate and strengthen the lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine. They also safely test a patient’s isometric strength compared to age and gender norms. Your progress will be carefully measured from day one.
Our three primary goals: Increased range of motion, increased strength and decreased muscle aches. And when your goals are met, quality of life improves.
For the vast range of spinal conditions, we have four indispensable clinical Medx machines at the Center: cervical extension, cervical rotation, lumbar extension and torso rotation.
